For instance, [movie] censors were adamant that pregnancy and its effect on the woman’s body never be shown; in Pennsylvania a woman could not eve be shown making baby clothes. When one of the state’s censors was queried on such cuts, he responded: ‘The movies are patronized by thousands of children who believe that babies are brought by the stork; and it would be criminal to undeceive them.’
I’ve been reading a fascinating book called Censoring Sex; it’s taught me that Pennsylvania was at the forefront of hilarious early movie censorship.
