That’s What The Germans Want You To Think
Barack Obama is touring Europe this week; he spoke before 200k in Germany. Unfortunately, American journalists and bloggers apparently only know one thing about that country: David Hasselhoff was once popular there as a singer.
No matter where you read the news of Obama’s Germany visit, you probably read some bad joke such as, “With this crowd, you’d think David Hasselhoff was here!” Or maybe something like, “It’s impressive until you realize that David Hasselhoff is also like a rock star over there.” That second one, incidentally, was from Jimmy Kimmel.
David Hasselhoff had his one #1 hit in Germany in 1989. People are, essentially, just re-using the joke Norm MacDonald used on Weekend Update in the 90s. (The 1890s.) When John McCain visits Europe, I have a great “Jane, you ignorant slut!” joke to use.
