Regular readers may be familiar with the friends’ cats I occasionally watch; they pop up from time to time on Philadelphia Will Do. (Astute readers may recognize them as the kittens scared of the Roomba back in 2010.) Above is the one I call Whitey, photographed at their house on Saturday night.

About an hour after I took this photo, a mob of teenagers attacked. One of those friends, Emily, is in the hospital with a broken leg. Emily is a tremendous talent, a colleague whose work I admire. She’s also one of my best friends. Actually, I’ve met most of my closest friends through Emily in some way. And what happened Saturday night breaks my fucking heart.

If you can, I’d ask you to please donate to the fund The AV Club has set up to pay for her medical expenses. If you won’t listen to me, I should also note NOFX frontman Fat Mike’s record label also suggests you do it. And, really, look how adorable that cat in the photo is.
