I’m easily amused, but I have been giggling all day over this “Magic Johnson Buys Los Angeles Dodgers—but What’s the Batman Connection?” headline on E! Online. It has literally made my day so much more pleasant.

I think it’s the but in the headline that gets me the most. Why isn’t it and? Using but makes it seem like Magic Johnson is Batman’s most notorious foe, or maybe that the Magic Johnson Theatres don’t show Batman movies. Should we be surprised there’s a Batman connection?

The connection, if you hadn’t guessed, is pretty tenuous: One of the investors in the Magic Johnson group that’s buying the Dodgers is Peter Guber, who was a producer on the Tim Burton Batman movies (Batman and Batman Returns). I guess those are his most famous films, but this headline could just as easily have been “Magic Johnson Buys Los Angeles Dodgers—but What’s the Tango & Cash Connection?”

The article ends with a little quip: “There’s no word yet if capes and bat ears will be added to the players’ uniforms.” Or maybe, since Guber also produced Caddyshack II, a talking gopher voiced by Frank Walker will wreak havoc on Dodger Stadium. (No word yet on that.)

I’m (honestly!) not trying to mock. This headline is amazing! I’ve been appending “—but What’s the Batman Connection?” to every headline I’ve read all day, and I suggest you try it.

Philadelphians will know Max Talbot and Scott Hartnell of the Flyers are humming the Action News theme along with 6 ABC’s morning show crew.

What I like imagining is the reaction to this commercial to someone from out of town. They must think we’re a bunch of rubes who can’t speak English! Well, more than they already do.

What I also like is that it’s clear Matt O’Donnell is the only morning anchor who can ice skate.
